Tire Pressure Monitor System

Print

General Information

A tire pressure warning valve and transmitter is equipped with a tire pressure sensor and a transmitter and is installed in each tire and wheel assembly. The sensor measures the tire pressure. The measured value and transmitter ID are transmitted to the tire pressure warning antenna and receiver on the body as radio waves and then sent to the tire pressure warning ECU from the tire pressure warning antenna and receiver. If the transmitter ID has already been registered, the ECU compares the measured air pressure value with the standard value. When the value is less than the standard value registered in the tire pressure warning ECU, the warning light on the combination meter comes on. The tire pressure warning reset switch addresses the differences in the air pressure settings by the type of tires.

Pressure Monitor

Fail Safe Function

Specific to:

Toyota Yaris 2007-2010

  1. When a system malfunction occurs in the tire pressure warning system, the tire pressure warning light blinks.
  2.
  3. The result of this diagnosis is stored in the skid control ECU.
  4.

Initialization Procedure

Specific to:

Toyota Yaris 2007-2010

  1. This system requires initialization after changing tires or wheels, or after rotating the tires.
  2.
  3. Be sure to adjust the tire pressure to the specified value before initialization.
  4.
  5. With the vehicle stopped, turn the ignition switch to the ON position
  6.
  7. Press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch until the tire pressure warning light blinks 3 times at 1 second intervals.
    NOTE
If the tire pressure warning light does not blink, perform the initialization again. If the tire pressure warning light repeats a cycle of ON (0.5 sec.) and OFF (2.5 sec.) while the vehicle is being driven, initialization may have failed. If so, perform the initialization again.

  8.
  9. Drive the vehicle at 19 MPH (30 km/h) or more, to complete initialization of the skid control ECU. (It takes more than one hour.)
  10.
  11. After initialization is completed, the skid control ECU monitors the tire pressure by using the wheel speed sensors.
  12.
  13. To verify that the system has been initialized, check the length of time the tire pressure warning light is on after turning the ignition switch to the ON position.
    1. Not initialized: 4 sec.
    2.
    3. Initialized: 3 sec.
    4.

  14.

Precautions

Specific to:

Toyota Yaris 2007-2010

  1. When the tire pressure warning light comes on, immediately check the air pressure of all tires and adjust to the specified pressure. Set tire pressure within the specified range before initialization. If the tire pressure is not within the specified range, the tire pressure warning system will not function.
  2.
  3. In the following cases, the system may not operate normally:
    1. A compact spare tire, snow tires, or tire chains are used.
    2.
    3. The tire pressure is excessively higher than specified, or tire pressure suddenly drops due to bursting or other causes.
    4.
    5. The vehicle is driven on a slippery road surface such as rough or frozen roads.
    6.
    7. The vehicle speed is less than 19 MPH (30 km/h) or more than 62 MPH (100 km/h) , and the driving duration is less than 5 minutes.
    8.
    9. The tires differ in tread pattern or by manufacturer.
    10.
    11. The tires are not the specified size.
    12.
    13. The tread wear is very different among the installed tires.
    14.
    15. During rapid acceleration/deceleration or sharp turns.
    16.
    17. Towing a trailer.
    18.
    19. The loading is over the limit or imbalanced.
    20.
    21. Initialization was not performed correctly after replacing or rotating tires or wheels.
    22.
    23. The outside temperature is below 32°F (0°C) or above 104°F (40°C).

Servicing

Specific to:

Toyota Yaris 2007-2010

  1. When the tire pressure warning light comes on after blinking for 1 minute, there is a malfunction in the system. Check for DTCs.
  2.
  3. It is necessary to register the transmitter ID in the tire pressure warning ECU after replacing a tire pressure warning valve and transmitter and/or tire pressure warning ECU.
  4.
  5. When replacing the tire pressure warning ECU:
    1. Using the DATA LIST, read the transmitter IDs registered in the ECU and make a note of them before removing the tire pressure warning ECU.
    2.
    3. Register the transmitter IDs after installing a new tire pressure warning ECU.
    4.

  6.
  7. When replacing a tire pressure warning valve and transmitter:
    1. Take a note of the 7-digit number (transmitter ID) written on the new tire pressure warning valve and transmitter when replacing it. Register the transmitter IDs in the tire pressure warning ECU after replacing the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter and installing the tires onto the wheels.
      NOTE
The transmitter ID is written on the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. It will be unable to be read after installing the tire onto the wheel. Therefore, take a note of the transmitter ID before installing the tire onto the wheel. In order to register IDs, all IDs for the vehicle are necessary.

Tire Pressure Warning Reset Switch

Specific to:

Toyota Yaris 2007-2010

By operating the tire pressure warning reset switch, the tire pressure warning ECU can be set to issue a warning at an inflation pressure that corresponds to the standard pressure of tires.

Operate the tire pressure warning reset switch only after the inflation pressures of all tires have been adjusted on the vehicle.

To initialize the system, press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch for 3 seconds or longer with the ignition switch in the ON position. When the system receives the initialization signal, the warning light blinks 3 times (1 second on, 1 second off).

During initialization, the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter measures the inflation pressure of the tire, and registers the signals that are transmitted into the tire pressure warning ECU at a frequency of once per minute. The initialization process is completed when signals from all the tires have been received. It takes a few minutes.
