- Position the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Remove the key.
Remove the driver air bag module, as follows:
CAUTIONAlways carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
CAUTIONNever probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
CAUTIONTo reduce the risk of accidental deployment, do not use any memory saver devices. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death.
NOTEThe air bag warning indicator illuminates when the restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTERepair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
Disarm the SRS, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
CAUTIONDo NOT proceed until the SRS is properly disarmed!
NOTERepeat this step for both locking pins.
Using a 3-mm Allen wrench or a suitable tool through the access hole on the backside of the steering wheel, position the tool against the spring clip and push in, disengaging the clip from the locking pin. With the spring clip disengaged from the locking pin, gently pull back on that side of the driver air bag module to release it from the steering wheel.
WARNINGDo not pull the driver air bag module electrical connectors out by the locking buttons. Damage to the locking buttons can occur.
Using a small screwdriver, as shown in the accompanying illustration, lift up and release the locking buttons on the driver air bag module electrical connectors. Once the locking buttons are released, remove the electrical connectors and the driver air bag module.
NOTEMark the steering wheel and column shaft for reference during installation.
- Disarm the SRS, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
- Remove the steering wheel nut.
Disconnect the steering wheel switches electrical connector.
WARNINGNever remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. Damage to the column can occur.
Using a suitable puller, remove the steering wheel.
Installation of the steering wheel is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following:
- Align the steering wheel using the matchmark made during removal.
- Tigthen the steering wheel nut to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
Install the driver-s side air bag module, as follows:
WARNINGDo not install the driver air bag module electrical connectors by the locking buttons. Damage to the locking buttons can occur.
WARNINGThe driver air bag module electrical connector locking buttons must be in the released position when the connector is being installed or connector damage may occur.
WARNINGThe driver air bag module electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the driver air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the driver air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the driver air bag module. Damage to the connector or component may occur.
With the locking buttons released, install the driver air bag module electrical connectors fully into the driver air bag module and seat the locking buttons.
NOTEYou will hear -clicks- when both wire clips are seated in the driver air bag module.
- Align the driver air bag module locking pins to the steering wheel and, while pushing inward, seat the 2 driver air bag module locking pins to the steering wheel wire clips.
- When the 2 locking pins are seated in place, there should be an even gap between the driver air bag module trim cover and the steering wheel.
- Rearm the SRS, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
- With the locking buttons released, install the driver air bag module electrical connectors fully into the driver air bag module and seat the locking buttons.
