Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Drain the transmission fluid.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Right-hand front fender apron
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Transmission oil cooler hoses, if equipped
     
    Radiator
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Battery and battery tray
     
    Battery carrier
     
    Brake booster hose
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Transmission control cables
     
    Clutch release cylinder assembly, if equipped
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Alternator
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Glove compartment door
     
    Engine wire from the ECM and junction block
     
    Engine ground wire
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly

  13. Separate the intermediate steering shaft assembly.
    NOTE
    Matchmark the main shaft and intermediate shaft for reassembly.

  15. Remove or disconnect the following from both sides of the front suspension:
    1. Hub nut
    2.  
    3. Stabilizer link
    4.  
    5. Wheel speed sensor
    6.  
    7. Tie rod assembly
    8.  
    9. Lower control arm
    10.

  17. Separate the axle assembly from the halfshaft.
    NOTE
    Matchmark the halfshaft and axle hub for reassembly.

  19. Disconnect the oil pump reservoir and return hose.
  20.  
  21. Secure the engine with a suitable engine lifting device.
  22.  
  23. Remove the mounting bolts from the left and right engine mounts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the mounting bolts from the left and right front suspension braces.
  26.  
  27. Remove the engine/transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following torques:
    1. Left-hand engine mount bolts: 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Right-hand engine mount bolts: 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Front suspension braces: Bolts A to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm). Bolts B to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).

  31. Refill the transmission with fluid to the correct level.
  32.  
  33. Refill the engine with oil.
  34.  
  35. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  36.  
  37. Start the engine and check for leaks.
