Brake Shoes

  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the caliper.
  4.  
  5. Temporarily install the lug nuts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hole plug, and turn the adjuster to expand the shoes until the disc locks.
  8.  
  9. Contract the shoe adjuster until the disc can rotate smoothly. Standard : return 8 notches
  10.  
  11. Check that there is no brake drag.
  12.  
  13. Install the hole plug.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Scion tC 2007-2008

  1. Make sure the parking brake is fully released.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
    NOTE
    Matchmark the disc (rotor) and the axle hub. If the rotor cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the wheel turns freely.

  9. Remove parking brake shoe strut, as follows:
    1. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the 2 parking brake shoe return tension springs on the upper side of the shoe.
    2.  
    3. Remove the parking brake shoe strut.
    4.

  11. Remove parking brake shoe adjusting screw, as follows:
    1. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the anchor side parking brake shoe return tension spring.
    2.  
    3. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
    4.

  13. Remove parking brake shoe no.2:
    1. Using SST 09718-00010, or equivalent, remove the parking brake shoe hold-down compression spring, parking brake shoe hold- down spring pin and parking brake shoe no.1.
    2.  
    3. Using the special tool, remove the parking brake shoe hold-down compression spring and parking brake shoe hold-down spring pin.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the parking brake shoe LH from the parking brake shoe lever LH, and remove the parking brake shoe LH.
    6.

  15. Inspect parking brake shoe lining thickness:
    1. Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the shoe lining.

      Standard thickness: 3.2 mm (0.126 in.)
       
      Minimum thickness: 1.0 mm (0.039 in.)

  17. Inspect brake disc and parking brake shoe lining for proper contact. Apply chalk to the inside surface of the disc, then grind down the brake shoe lining to fit. If the contact between the brake disc and the shoe lining is improper, repair it using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe assembly.

  19. Remove the parking brake shoe lever:
    1. Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the parking brake cable no.3 and remove the parking brake shoe lever.

To install:

  1. Apply high temperature grease to the shoe attachment surfaces of the backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Using needle-nose pliers, connect the parking brake cable no.3 to the parking brake shoe lever.
  4.  
  5. Install parking brake shoe no.2:
    1. Apply high temperature grease to the contact part of the parking brake shoe and parking brake shoe lever.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09718-00010, or equivalent, install the parking brake shoe no.2 with the parking brake shoe hold-down compression spring and parking brake shoe hold-down spring pin.
    4.  
    5. Using the special tool, install the parking brake shoe no.1 with the parking brake shoe hold-down compression spring and parking brake shoe hold-down spring pin.
    6.

  7. Install parking brake shoe adjusting screw set:
    1. Apply high temperature grease to the adjusting bolt and support piece.
    2.  
    3. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
    4.  
    5. Using needle-nose pliers, install the parking brake shoe return tension spring.
    6.

  9. Install the parking brake shoe strut:
    1. Apply high temperature grease to the contact part of the parking brake shoe strut and parking brake shoe return tension spring.
    2.  
    3. Install the parking brake shoe strut.
    4.  
    5. Using needle-nose pliers, install the 2 parking brake shoe return tension springs on the upper side of the shoe.
      NOTE
      Fit the parking brake shoe return tension springs securely into the grooves of the parking brake shoe strut.

  11. Check that all of the parking brake components are installed properly. There should be no oil or grease on the friction surface of the shoe lining and disc.

  13. Install rear disc

  15. Adjust parking brake shoe clearance, as outlined in this section.

  17. Install the caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).

  19. Install rear wheel
  20.  
  21. Break in, or settle, the parking brake shoes and disc:
    1. Drive the vehicle at about 50 km/h (31 mph) on a safe, level and dry road.
    2.  
    3. With the parking brake release button pushed in, pull the lever with 22 ft. lbs. (98 Nm) of force.
    4.  
    5. Drive the vehicle for about 0.25 miles (400 meters) in this condition.
    6.  
    7. Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times.
    8.

  23. Inspect parking brake lever travel, and adjust if necessary. Refer to the procedure under Parking Brake Cable Adjustment.
