  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Starter electrical connections
     
    Starter mounting bolts
     
    Starter

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter. Tighten the mounting bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Starter electrical connections. Tighten the starter wire nut to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable

Testing



Specific to:

Scion tC 2007-2008

Scion xB 2008

Scion xD 2008

  1. Inspect the starter assembly.
    WARNING
    These tests must be performed within 3 to 5 seconds to prevent burnout of the coil.

  2.  
  3. Perform the pull-in test, as follows:
    1. Remove the nut, then disconnect the lead wire from terminal C.
    2.  
    3. Connect the battery to the starter magnetic switch as shown in the illustration. Check that the clutch pinion gear is extended.
    4.  
    5. If the clutch pinion gear does not move, replace the starter magnetic switch.

  5. Perform the hold-in test, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the negative (-) lead from terminal C.
    2.  
    3. Check that the clutch pinion gear remains extended.
    4.  
    5. If the clutch pinion gear returns inward, replace the starter magnetic switch.

  7. Check the operation, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the negative (-) lead from the starter body. Check that the clutch pinion gear returns. If the clutch pinion gear does not return inward, replace the starter magnetic switch.

  9. Perform the no-load performance test, as follows:
    1. Connect the lead wire to terminal C and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Make sure that the lead is not grounded.

    3. Clamp the starter in a vise.
    4.  
    5. Connect the battery and an ammeter to the starter as shown in the illustration.
    6.  
    7. Check that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily with the clutch pinion gear extended. Check that the ammeter reads the specified current. Specified current: 90 A or less at 11.5 V. If the result is within specifications, replace the starter.

  11. Check the starter relay, as follows:
    1. Use an ohmmeter measure the resistance between the terminals and compare with the accompanying table.
    2.  
    3. If the result is within specifications, replace the starter relay.
