REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Coil Spring Suspension

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Raise and support the vehicle with jackstands positioned at the extreme front ends of the frame rails.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper mounting bolt.
  6.

  1. Remove the two lower mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock absorber.

  1. When installing the shock absorber, make sure the upper busings are in the correct position. Replace any worn or cracked bushings. Tighten the top nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Then, tighten the lower bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Leaf Spring Suspension
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two upper shock absorber bracket-to-frame bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower bracket nut and remove the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. If new shocks are being installed, remove the upper bracket from the old shock. Replace any worn or cracked bushings.
  10.  
  11. When installing the shock absorbers, tighten all fasteners to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). Installation of the remaining components is the reverse of the removal.

Torsion Bar Suspension

  1. Remove the hardware from the shock absorber stud.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower bolts, then remove the shock absorber.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the lower retainer and grommet on the shock absorber stud. Insert the shock absorber through the frame hole. Install the lower bolt.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the bolt to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm.)
  4.  
  5. Install the upper grommet and retainer on the shock absorber stud. Install the bayonet nut and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
