    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    See Figures 1, 2 and 3

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Label and disconnect the distributor electrical harness.
    4.

On some engines, it may be necessary to label and remove the distributor wires and cap in order to gain clearance to remove the distributor.

    1. Remove the distributor cap and position it aside with the ignition wires still attached.
    2.
    3. Matchmark the position of the rotor to the distributor housing and the distributor housing to the engine.
    4.
    5. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp.
    6.
    7. Remove the distributor from the engine.

    To install:

Before installation, inspect the distributor O-ring and drive gear for wear and/or damage. Rotate the distributor shaft to make sure it moves freely, without binding.

    Engine Not Disturbed
    1. Install the distributor, aligning the distributor housing and rotor with the matchmarks made during removal.
    2.
    3. Install the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp. Only snug the bolt at this time.
    4.
    5. Connect the distributor electrical harness.
    6.
    7. Install the distributor cap and wires.
    8.

Make sure the ignition wires are securely connected to the distributor cap and spark plugs.

    1. Connect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Start the engine and adjust the ignition timing. Refer to General Information & Maintenance .
    4.
    5. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt securely.
    6.
    7. Recheck the initial timing and re-adjust if necessary.
    8.

    Engine Disturbed

Use this procedure if the engine position is disturbed after the distributor is removed.

    1. Disconnect the ignition wire from the No. 1 cylinder spark plug and remove the spark plug.
    2.
    3. Place a finger over the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine clockwise until compression is felt at the spark plug hole.
    4.
    5. Install the No. 1 cylinder spark plug.
    6.
    7. Align the timing pointer with the 0 degree (TDC) mark on the crankshaft damper.
    8.
    9. Clean the distributor mounting at the engine and distributor base. Lightly oil the rubber O-ring seal on the distributor housing.
    10.
    11. Hold the distributor over the mounting pad on the cylinder block so that the distributor body flange coincides with the mounting pad and the rotor points to the No. 1 cylinder firing position.
    12.
    13. Install the distributor while holding the rotor in position, allowing it to move only enough to engage the slot in the drive gear.
    14.
    15. Install the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp. Tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (22.2 Nm).
    16.

Ensure that the ignition wires are securely connected to the distributor cap and spark plugs.

    1. Install the distributor cap and wires.
    2.

Ensure that the rotor tip is pointing to the distributor cap's No. 1 spark plug tower position, prior to fastening the distributor cap in place.

    1. Connect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Start the engine and check the ignition timing.
