Since 1973 all GM cars have been equipped with alternators which have built-in solid state voltage regulators. The regulator is in the end frame (inside) of the alternator and requires no adjustment. The following procedure applies only to pre-1973 units.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
All external voltage regulators can be removed and installed by using the same procedure.
- Disconnect the cables from the battery posts.
- Label and disconnect each electrical lead from the voltage regulator.
- Remove the regulator by withdrawing its securing screws.
- Installation is the reverse of the above. Be sure that the electrical leads are connected to the correct terminals and that all connections are clean and tight.
