Voltage Regulator

Since 1973 all GM cars have been equipped with alternators which have built-in solid state voltage regulators. The regulator is in the end frame (inside) of the alternator and requires no adjustment. The following procedure applies only to pre-1973 units.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



All external voltage regulators can be removed and installed by using the same procedure.

  1. Disconnect the cables from the battery posts.
  2.  
  3. Label and disconnect each electrical lead from the voltage regulator.
  4.  
  5. Remove the regulator by withdrawing its securing screws.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the above. Be sure that the electrical leads are connected to the correct terminals and that all connections are clean and tight.
