    Adjustment



    Only the Explorer Sport and Sport-Trac 2-wheel drive bearings are adjustable. Refer to Removal and Installation procedure in this section for adjusting procedure.

    The wheel bearings are not adjustable.

    Only the Explorer Sport-Trac 2WD bearings are adjustable. Refer to Removal and Installation procedure in this section for adjusting procedure.

    Removal & Installation




    WARNING
    If equipped, always turn off the Automatic Ride Control (ARC) service switch before lifting the vehicle off of the ground. Failure to do so could damage the ARC system components.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:
      WARNING
      Never reuse the wheel hub nut and washer. This nut is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused.


      NOTE
      The hub shaft is a slip fit into the wheel hub and bearing; a press is not normally required.



      Negative battery cable
       
      Front wheels
       
      Front disc brake caliper, bracket and rotor
       
      Brake rotor splash shield
       
      Antilock Brake System (ABS) sensor and wire harness from the steering knuckle, if equipped
       
      Front wheel hub nut and washer
       
      Wheel hub/bearing to steering knuckle retaining bolts
       
      Hub and bearing assembly

    5. Ensure that the wheel hub shaft can be pushed inwards. If not, assemble a press to the front wheel studs and press the wheel hub shaft inwards slightly to break it loose.
    6.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      ABS sensor to the wheel hub then position the hub to the front axle shaft and steering knuckle
       
      Retaining bolts. Torque the bolts to 74-96 ft. lbs. (100-130 Nm).
       
      Position the hub on the driveshaft and into the steering knuckle. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
       
      Brake rotor splash shield
       
      ABS sensor. Torque the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
       
      Hub washer and nut and tighten to 157-213 ft. lbs. (212-288 Nm)
       
      Front brake rotor, bracket and caliper
       
      Front wheels
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  


    WARNING
    If equipped, always turn off the Automatic Ride Control (ARC) service switch before lifting the vehicle off of the ground. Failure to do so could damage the ARC system components.

    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

    2-Wheel Drive

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate.
      NOTE
      Match-mark the brake disc and hub.

    4.  
    5. Remove the hub grease cap.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cotter pin.
    8.  
    9. Remove the nut retainer.
    10.  
    11. Remove the spindle nut.
    12.  
    13. Remove the front wheel outer bearing retainer washer.
    14.  
    15. Remove the outer front wheel bearing.
    16.  
    17. Remove the brake disc and hub.
    18.  
    19. Remove the wheel hub grease seal and inner wheel bearing.
    20.  
    21. Place the hub on a solid wood work surface.
    22.  
    23. Using a suitable drift, drive out the inner bearing race; then, in a similar fashion, drive out the outer bearing race.
    24.  

    To install:

    1. Clean and inspect the front wheel bearings and the brake disc and hub. Use Metal Brake Parts Cleaner F6AZ-2C410-AB, or equivalent.
    2.  
    3. Pack the front wheel bearings. Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or -K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.
    4.  
    5. Lubricate the bearing race bore. Using a suitable driver, drive in a new outer bearing race until it fully seats; then, in a similar fashion, drive a new inner race into position.
    6.  
    7. Pack the hub bore with the same grease used to pack the bearings.
    8.  
    9. Install the inner front wheel bearing.
    10.  
    11. Install a new wheel hub grease seal.
    12.  
    13. Position the hub on the spindle.
    14.  
    15. Install the outer front wheel bearing.
    16.  
    17. Install the front wheel outer bearing retainer washer.
    18.  
    19. Install the spindle nut.
    20.  
    21. Tighten the spindle nut to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) while rotating the brake disc and hub.
    22.  
    23. Loosen the spindle nut one-half turn.
    24.  
    25. Tighten the spindle nut to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm) while rotating the brake disc and hub.
    26.  
    27. Install the nut retainer.
    28.  
    29. Install the cotter pin.
    30.  
    31. Install the hub grease cap.
    32.  
    33. Install the front disc brake caliper anchor plate.
    34.  


    WARNING
    If equipped, always turn off the Automatic Ride Control (ARC) service switch before lifting the vehicle off of the ground. Failure to do so could damage the ARC system components.


    NOTE
    The wheel speed sensor electrical connectors are located in the engine compartment secured to the fender aprons.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.

    3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor.
    4.  
    5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    6.  
    7. Detach the wheel speed sensor harness from the brake hose.
    8.  
    9. Remove the brake hose-to-wheel knuckle bolt.
    10.  
    11. Remove the 2 anchor plate bolts.
      WARNING
      Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the hose or damage to the hose can occur.

    12.  
    13. Position the caliper, pads and anchor plate aside.
    14.  
    15. Remove the brake disc.
    16.  
    17. Remove and discard the 3 wheel hub-to-wheel knuckle bolts.
    18.  
    19. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Always install new wheel hub-to-wheel knuckle bolts.
    4.  
    5. Observe the following torques:

      Wheel hub-to-knuckle bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm)
       
      Anchor plate bolts: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm)
       

    6.

    If equipped, always turn off the Automatic Ride Control (ARC) service switch before lifting the vehicle off of the ground. Failure to do so could damage the ARC system components.

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
      NOTE
      Apply a thin coat of silicone sealant to the wheel hub mounting surfaces before installation.

    3. Torque the hub-to-knuckle bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm)

    17. Remove the brake disc and hub.

    19. Remove the wheel hub grease seal and inner wheel bearing.
    20.  
    21. Place the hub on a solid wood work surface.

      Wheel hub-to-knuckle bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm)
       
      Anchor plate bolts: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm)

    3. Remove the brake disc.
    4.  
    5. Remove the three bolts and the dust shield.
      WARNING
      Discard the wheel hub retainer nut and washer assembly. It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused.

    6.  
    7. Remove the wheel hub retainer nut and washer assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolts and position the anti-lock sensor aside.
      WARNING
      Do not overextend CV-joint and boots when removing the hub and bearing assembly.


      NOTE
      The CV-joint is a slip fit into the wheel hub and bearing. A puller will not normally be required.

    10.  
    11. Remove the three bolts and the wheel hub.
    12.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Observe the following torques:

      Wheel hub-to-knuckle: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
       
      Axle shaft nut: 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm)
       
      Dust shield: 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)

    WARNING
    If equipped, always turn off the Automatic Ride Control (ARC) service switch before lifting the vehicle off of the ground. Failure to do so could damage the ARC system components.

    3. Loosen the axle retainer nut.
      NOTE
      The wheel speed sensor electrical connectors are located in the engine compartment secured to the fender aprons.

    5. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor.
    6.  
    7. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove and discard the axle retainer nut.
    10.  
    11. Separate the outboard CV-joint from the wheel hub.
    12.  
    13. Detach the wheel speed sensor harness from the brake hose.
    14.  
    15. Remove the brake hose-to-wheel knuckle bolt.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 anchor plate bolts.
      WARNING
      Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the hose or damage to the hose can occur.

    18.  
    19. Position the caliper, pads and anchor plate aside.
    20.  
    21. Remove the brake disc.
    22.  
    23. Remove and discard the 3 wheel hub-to-wheel knuckle bolts.

    25. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly.

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Always install new wheel hub-to-wheel knuckle bolts and a new axle retainer nut.
    4.  
    5. Observe the following torques:

      Wheel hub-to-knuckle bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm)
       
      Anchor plate bolts: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm)
       
      Axle retainer nut: 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm)

    5. Press the outboard CV-joint until it is loose in the hub.
    6.  
    7. Detach the harness from the retainers.
      WARNING
      Do not overextend the CV-joint and boots when removing the wheel hub.

    8.  
    9. Remove the bolts, wheel hub and sensor as an assembly. Discard the bolts.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
      NOTE
      Apply a thin coat of silicone sealant to the wheel hub mounting surfaces before installation.

    2.  
    3. Observe the following torques:

      Hub-to-knuckle: 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm.
       
      Hub nut: 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
       

    4.  

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

    3. Remove or disconnect the following:
      NOTE
      The wheel speed sensor connectors are located in the engine compartment and are secured to the fender aprons.


      WARNING
      Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components may result.



      Hub nut. Discard the nut.

    4.  
    5. Press the outboard CV joint until it is loose in the hub.
    6.  
    7. Detach the harness from the retainers.
      WARNING
      Do not overextend the CV joint and boots when removing the wheel hub.

    8.  
    9. Remove the bolts, wheel hub and sensor as an assembly. Discard the bolts.
      NOTE
      Apply a thin coat of silicone sealant to the wheel hub mounting surfaces before installation.

    10.  
    11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Observe the following torques:

      Hub-to-knuckle: 83 ft. lbs. 112 Nm)
       
      Hub nut: 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm)
       

    12.  

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the -Precautions- section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the brake disc.
    4.  
    5. Remove the three bolts and the dust shield.
      WARNING
      Discard the wheel hub retainer nut and washer assembly. It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused.

    6.  
    7. Remove the wheel hub retainer nut and washer assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolts and position the anti-lock sensor aside.
      WARNING
      Do not overextend CV-joint and boots when removing the hub and bearing assembly.


      NOTE
      The CV-joint is a slip fit into the wheel hub and bearing. A puller will not normally be required.

    10.  
    11. Remove the three bolts and the wheel hub.
    12.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Observe the following torque specifications:

      Wheel hub-to-knuckle: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
       
      Axle shaft nut: 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm)
       
      Dust shield: 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)

    13. Detach the wheel speed sensor harness from the brake hose.

    15. Remove the brake hose-to-wheel knuckle bolt.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 anchor plate bolts.
      WARNING
      Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the hose or damage to the hose can occur.

    18.  
    19. Position the caliper, pads and anchor plate aside.
    20.  
    21. Remove the brake disc.
    22.  
    23. Remove and discard the 3 wheel hub-to-wheel knuckle bolts.
    24.  
    25. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
    26.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Always install new wheel hub-to-wheel knuckle bolts and a new axle retainer nut.
    4.  
    5. Observe the following torque specifications:

      Wheel hub-to-knuckle bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm)
       
      Anchor plate bolts: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm)
       
      Axle retainer nut: 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm)
