    Parking Brake Shoes

    For vehicles with rear disc brakes only. For vehicles with rear drum brakes the rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

    Adjustment



    Refer to the procedure Parking Brake Shoes, Removal and Installation in this section. The installation procedure includes the proper adjustment procedure.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
    2.  
    3. Make sure the parking brake control is fully released.
    4.  
    5. Remove the left cowl side trim panel.
    6.  
    7. With an assistant, release the parking brake cable tension by pulling down on the intermediate cable at the cable-to-cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop and a 4 mm (0.15 in) x 150 mm (5.9 in) retainer pin can be inserted.
      NOTE
      Make sure the cable-to-cable union is connected to the front and rear cable before removing the brake control retaining pin, and the cable tension is reloaded slowly.

    9. Disconnect the cable at the cable-to-cable union.
    10.  
    11. Remove the rear brake disc.
    12.  
    13. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw.
    14.  
    15. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 parking brake shoe hold-down springs and pins.
    18.  
    19. Remove the parking brake shoe retracting spring and the parking brake shoes.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Position the parking brake shoes and attach the retracting spring.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 parking brake shoe hold-down pins and springs.
    4.  
    5. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
      NOTE
      Completely retract the parking brake adjusting screw before installation.

    7. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw.
    8.  
    9. Use a brake adjusting gauge to measure the inside diameter of the parking brake drum.
    10.  
    11. Adjust the parking brake shoe clearance of 0.04 inch (1.07 mm) less than the inside diameter of the parking brake drum. Make sure that the parking brake shoes are correctly centered and measure across the center point of the shoes. Rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster wheel to achieve the correct parking brake shoe-to-brake disc clearance.

    13. Install the rear brake disc.

    15. To reload the tension on the parking brake cable, follow the release procedure in reverse.

    NOTE
    Make sure the parking brake control is fully released.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.

    3. Relieve the tension on the parking brake system.
      1. Pull the front parking brake cable and conduit.
      2.  
      3. Insert a 4mm ( 5 / 32 inch) drill bit or equivalent retainer.

    5. Raise and support the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the rear brake disc.
    10.  
    11. Remove the brake shoe retracting spring.
    12.  
    13. Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    14.  
    15. Remove the brake adjuster screw.
    16.  
    17. Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down springs.
    18.  
    19. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings along with the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    20.  
    21. Inspect the components for excessive wear or damage and install new as required.

    To install:


    NOTE
    Lubricate the brake shoe contact point before installation of rear shoes using grease.

    1. Install the rear brake shoes and linings along with the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    2.  
    3. Install the brake shoe hold-down springs.
    4.  
    5. Install the brake adjuster screw.
    6.  
    7. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    8.  
    9. Install the outboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    10.  
    11. Using a brake gauge, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
    12.  
    13. Using the gauge, set the rear brake shoe and lining diameter to 0.020 inch (0.5mm) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
    14.  
    15. Install the rear brake disc.
      CAUTION
      Always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign material present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheel hub, brake drum or brake disc that contacts the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and come off while the vehicle is in motion, causing loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    17. Clean the wheel hub mounting surface.
    18.  
    19. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
    20.  
    21. Apply tension to the parking brake cable system.
      1. Hold the front parking brake cable and conduit taut.
      2.  
      3. Remove the retainer from the parking brake control.
      4.

    23. Check operation of the parking brake.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the -Precautions- section and the -Brake Service Precautions- section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the rear brake disc.
    4.  
    5. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw.
    6.  
    7. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 parking brake shoe hold-down springs and pins.
    10.  
    11. Remove the parking brake shoe retracting spring and the parking brake shoes.

    To install:

    1. Position the parking brake shoes and attach the retracting spring.
