    CAUTION
    While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants, or premature failure of the power steering components can result.


    CAUTION
    Whenever the hoses are disconnected from the power steering pump. Make sure the accessory drive belt is not contaminated with power steering fluid.

    1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
    2.  
    3. Siphon the power steering fluid from the power steering reservoir.
    4.  
    5. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch electrical connector.
    8.  
    9. Remove the power steering line bracket nuts.
      NOTE
      A new Teflon® O-ring seal must be installed any time the power steering pressure line is disconnected from the power steering pump.

    10.  
    11. Disconnect the power steering pressure line from the power steering pump.
    12.  
    13. Remove and discard the Teflon O-ring seal
    14.  
    15. Release the clamp and disconnect the power steering fluid supply hose.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 lower power steering pump mounting bolts.
    18.  
    19. Remove the 2 upper power steering pump mounting bolts and the power steering pump.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Position the power steering pump into position.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 upper mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the 2 lower mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    6.  
    7. With a new O-ring, connect the power steering pressure line to the pump. Tighten the fitting to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install or connect the following: RL-BS0

      P/S line bracket and nuts
       
      PSP switch connector
       
      P/S pump pulley and accessory belt
       

    10.  
    11. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
    12.  

    2.0L (VIN 3) Engine



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    4.  
    5. Raise and support the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the accessory drive belt.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the p/s fluid cooler hose.
      1. Disconnect the hose using a Ford hose decoupler
      2.  
      3. Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container
      4.  

    10.  
    11. Lower the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Detach the power steering line support bracket.
    14.  
    15. Detach the speed control cable, if equipped).
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the power steering hose from the lower steering pump and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
    20.  
    21. Remove the power steering pump.
    22.  
    23. Remove the PSP switch.

    To install:


    NOTE
    If installing a new power steering pump, the unions that are supplied fitted to the pump should be removed and retained for future use.

    1. Using the special tool, install a new O-ring seal onto the steering gear to power steering pump union.
    2.  
    3. Install the PSP switch and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Install the power steering pump and tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Connect the power steering hose to the power steering pump.
    8.  
    9. Connect the PSP switch electrical connector.
    10.  
    11. Attach the power steering line support bracket and securely tighten the bolt.
    12.  
    13. Attach the speed control cable, if equipped.
    14.  
    15. Raise and support the vehicle.
    16.  
    17. Connect the power steering line and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
    18.  
    19. Connect the fluid cooler hose.
    20.  
    21. Install the accessory drive belt.
    22.  
    23. Reconnect negative battery cable.
    24.  
    25. Fill the power steering system and purge the system.
    26.  

    2.0L (VIN 5) Engine



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    4.  
    5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
    6.  
    7. Detach the fender splash shield from the front bumper cover to gain access to the right-hand headlamp assembly lower retaining bolt.
    8.  
    9. Remove the right-hand headlamp assembly lower retaining bolt.
    10.  
    11. Remove the power steering fluid cooler line from the cooler using a Ford hose decoupler.
      1. Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
      2.  

    12.  
    13. Disconnect the power steering line from the power steering pump and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
    14.  
    15. Remove the power steering pump lower retaining bolts.
    16.  
    17. Lower the vehicle.
    18.  
    19. Remove the radiator grille.
    20.  
    21. Remove the right-hand headlamp assembly.
    22.  
    23. Disconnect the power steering hose from the power steering pump and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
    24.  
    25. Detach the power steering line from the engine and position to one side.
    26.  
    27. Remove the power steering pump.
    28.  

    To install:


    NOTE
    If installing a new power steering pump, the unions supplied with the new pump should be removed and retained for further use.

    1. Install a new O-ring seal onto the power steering pump to steering gear line union.
    2.  
    3. Install the power steering pump and tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Attach the power steering line and tighten the retaining bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Connect the power steering fluid return hose.
    8.  
    9. Install the right hand headlamp assembly and radiator grille
    10.  
    11. Connect the high-pressure fluid line to the pump and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
    12.  
    13. Connect the power steering fluid cooler line.
    14.  
    15. Reconnect the splash shield.
    16.  
    17. Reinstall the accessory drive belt.
    18.  
    19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
    20.  
    21. Fill and purge the power steering system.
    22.  

    2.0L (VIN P) Engine



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    4.  
    5. Detach the accessory drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
      1. Using a 1 / 2 -inch square drive breaker bar in the hole provided, rotate the tensioner in a clockwise direction.
        NOTE
        Prevent the power steering pump pulley from rotating using a suitable tool.

    7. Remove the power steering pump pulley retaining nut and pulley.
    8.  
    9. Detach the power steering fluid reservoir hose from the power steering pump.
      1. Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
      2.  

    10.  
    11. Detach the power steering high-pressure line from the power steering pump.
      1. Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
      2.  

    12.  
    13. Remove the power steering pump.
    14.  
    15. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir to power steering pump hose union and discard the O-ring seal.

    To install:

    1. Install a new power steering fluid reservoir hose union O-ring seal.
    2.  
    3. Install the power steering fluid reservoir union and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Install the power steering pump and tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Install a new O-ring seal onto the power steering high-pressure line to power steering pump union.
    8.  
    9. Attach the power steering high-pressure line to the power steering pump and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
    10.  
    11. Attach the power steering fluid reservoir hose to the power steering pump.
    12.  
    13. Install the power steering pump pulley. Use a suitable tool to prevent the pulley from turning and tighten the nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
    14.  
    15. Attach the accessory drive belt to the power steering pump pulley.
      1. Using a 1 / 2 -inch square drive breaker bar in the hole provided, rotate the tensioner in a clockwise direction.
      2.  

    16.  
    17. Attach the accessory drive belt to the power steering pump pulley.
    18.  
    19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
    20.  
    21. Fill and purge the power steering system.
    22.
