    Automatic Transaxle



    Left Side

    NOTE
    The IB5 manual transmission is used with the 2.0L (VIN P) engine and the MTX75 manual transmission is used with the 2.0L (VIN 3 and N) and 2.3L (VIN Z) engines.


    NOTE
    The hub nut may be reused 4 times. Mark the nut at removal and only use hub nuts with 3 or fewer marks for assembly.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the strut and spring assembly mounting nuts by 4 turns.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Front wheel
       
      Hub retainer nut. Mark the nut.
       
      Lower ball joint
       

    6.  
    7. Press the stub shaft out of the wheel hub.
    8.  
    9. Separate the inner CV-joint from the transaxle as follows:

      If equipped with the IB5 manual transaxle, use Halfshaft remover 308-256
       
      If equipped with the MTX75 manual transaxle or with an automatic transaxle, use Halfshaft Remover 205-241 and a slide hammer

    To install:


    NOTE
    Replace the circlip for assembly.

    1. Install the halfshaft inner joint so that the circlip is felt to seat. Draw the stub shaft into the wheel hub with Halfshaft Installer 205-379.
    2.  
    3. Install or connect the following:

      Lower ball joint. Tighten the pinch bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
       
      Hub retainer nut. Tighten the nut to 232 ft. lbs. (316 Nm).
       
      Front wheel
       

    4.  
    5. Check the transaxle fluid and add, as necessary.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the strut center nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    8.  

    Right Side

    NOTE
    The hub nut may be reused 4 times. Mark the nut at removal and only use hub nuts with 3 or fewer marks for assembly.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the strut center nut 5 turns.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Front wheel
       
      Hub retainer nut. Mark the nut.
       
      Lower ball joint
       
      Intermediate shaft retaining clip
       

    6.  
    7. Press the stub shaft out of the wheel hub.
    8.  
    9. Remove the right axle halfshaft and the intermediate shaft as an assembly.
    10.  

    To install:


    NOTE
    Use a new retaining clip for assembly.

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Axle halfshaft and intermediate shaft assembly. Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Lower ball joint. Tighten the pinch bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
       
      Hub retainer nut. Tighten the nut to 232 ft. lbs. (316 Nm).
       
      Front wheel
       

    2.  
    3. Check the transaxle fluid and add, as necessary.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the strut center nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).

    Manual Transaxle



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount nuts by four turns.
    6.  
    7. Loosen the wheel nuts.
    8.  
    9. Loosen the wheel hub retaining nut.
    10.  
    11. Raise and support the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Remove the wheel.
      WARNING
      Protect the ball joint seat using a soft cloth to prevent damage.

    14.  
    15. Detach the lower arm ball joint.
      NOTE
      The wheel hub retaining nut can be reused four times; mark the retaining nut.

    16.  
    17. Press the halfshaft out of the wheel hub.
      WARNING
      Support the halfshaft. The inner halfshaft joint must not be bent by more than 18 degrees.

    18.  
    19. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    20.  
    21. Remove the front drive halfshaft from the transaxle.
      NOTE
      On vehicles equipped with an intermediate shaft, the intermediate shaft and halfshaft are removed as an assembly.

    22.  
    23. Close off the transaxle with auxiliary plugs.
    24.  

    To install:

    1. Install new self locking nuts and snap ring.
      WARNING
      Do not damage the oil seal when inserting the front drive halfshaft.

    2.  
    3. Make sure the snap ring is fully engaged, by pulling on the joint housing.
    4.  
    5. Remove the auxiliary plug from the transaxle opening.
    6.  
    7. Install the halfshaft and snap ring into the transaxle.
      NOTE
      The wheel hub retaining nut can be reused four times, inspect the markings on the retaining nut and install a new nut if necessary.

    8.  
    9. Do not fully tighten the wheel hub retaining nut.
    10.  
    11. Install the halfshaft stub into the wheel hub.
    12.  
    13. Loosely install the wheel hub retaining nut. Do not fully tighten.
    14.  
    15. Check the transmission fluid level.
    16.  
    17. Attach the lower arm ball joint and tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    18.  
    19. Install the wheel and loosely install the nuts. Do not fully tighten.
    20.  
    21. Tighten the wheel hub retaining nut to 233 ft. lbs. (316 Nm)
    22.  
    23. Tighten the wheel nuts to 94 ft. lbs. (128 Nm)
    24.  
    25. Lower the vehicle.
    26.  
    27. Tighten the strut and spring assembly to mount nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    28.  
    29. Reconnect negative battery cable.
