Fuel Pressure Regulator

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the fuel system relief procedure in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper manifold assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum tube.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the fuel pressure regulator snapring retainer.

  11. Remove the fuel pressure regulator assembly and the O-rings. Discard the O-rings, filter and back-up O-rings.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the O-rings with clean engine oil and install as an assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel pressure regulator, attach the vacuum tube.
  4.  
  5. Install the snapring retainer.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper manifold assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer clip (5).
  6.  
  7. Pull and twist the fuel pressure regulator (6) in order to remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel pressure regulator housing using a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the regulator seal lower O-ring (3).
  10.  
  11. Remove the regulator assembly filter (2).
  12.  
  13. Remove the regulator seal upper O-ring (1).
  14.  
  15. Remove the regulator seal backup ring (7).
  16.  
  17. Discard the O-rings.

To install:


NOTE
If the fuel pressure regulator is to be reinstalled, inspect the filter screen for contamination. If the filter screen is contaminated, replace the regulator.

  1. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the regulator seal backup ring (7).
  4.  
  5. Install the regulator seal upper O-ring (1).
  6.  
  7. Install the regulator assembly filter (2).
  8.  
  9. Install the regulator seal lower O-ring (3).
  10.  
  11. Assemble the regulator (6) with the vacuum tube pointing down into the regulator retainer clip.
  12.  
  13. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer clip (5).
  14.  
  15. Install the upper manifold assembly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Inspect for leaks.
    1. Turn the ignition ON , with the engine OFF , for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn the ignition ON , with the engine OFF .
    6.  
    7. Inspect for fuel leaks.
    8.

The fuel pressure regulator is a part of the fuel sender assembly in the fuel tank. Refer to the Fuel Pump Removal and Installation procedure in the section for servicing.

4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L Engines

NOTE
Three styles of fuel pressure regulators and fuel rails will be used in these models. Each regulator has a different "footprint" that consequently changes the size of the receiving port in the fuel rail. The regulator retaining clips are specific to each rail-regulator design and cannot be interchanged.

  1. Remove the engine sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  6.  
  7. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator retainer and the surrounding area.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer (1).
  10.  
  11. Remove the fuel pressure regulator (2).
  12.  
  13. Ensure none of the following parts are still in the fuel rail:

    Backup ring (3)
     
    Regulator Seal O-ring (4)
     
    Regulator filter (5)
     
    Regulator seal O-ring (6)

To install:

  1. Install the following parts onto the fuel pressure regulator (2), if necessary:

    Backup ring (3)
     
    Regulator seal O-ring (4)
     
    Regulator filter (5)
     
    Regulator seal O-ring (6)

  3. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator O-rings (4, 6) with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator (2).
    NOTE
    Whenever the fuel pressure regulator is removed from the fuel rail NEW O-rings and a NEW retaining clip should be used on reinstallation.

  7. Install the NEW fuel pressure regulator retainer (1).
  8.  
  9. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
  12.  
  13. Inspect for leaks.
  14.  
  15. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF, for 2 seconds.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  18.  
  19. Turn the ignition ON , with the engine OFF.
  20.  
  21. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  22.  
  23. Install the engine sight shield.
  24.  

5.7L And 7.4L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper manifold assembly.
    NOTE
    If the fuel pressure regulator is to be reinstalled, inspect the filter screen (if equipped) for contamination. If the filter screen is contaminated, replace the regulator.

  6.  
  7. Disassemble the fuel pressure regulator snap ring retainer.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the regulator assembly and the O-rings.
  10.  
  11. Discard the O-rings.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the backup O-ring, the large O-ring, the filter and the small O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Assemble the regulator with the vacuum tube pointing down into the snap ring retainer.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper manifold assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

8.1L Engine
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  4.  
  5. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator retainer and the surrounding area.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer (1). Remove the fuel pressure regulator (2) from the fuel pressure regulator housing.

To install:

  1. Install the backup ring (3) on the fuel pressure regulator (2).
  2.  
  3. Install the new large O-ring (4) on the fuel pressure regulator.
  4.  
  5. Install the regulator filter (5) on the fuel pressure regulator.
  6.  
  7. Install the new small O-ring (6) on the fuel pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator large O-ring and the small O-ring with clean engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Push the fuel pressure regulator into the regulator housing on the fuel rail.
  12.  
  13. Install a new fuel pressure regulator retainer (1).
  14.  
  15. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
  20.  
  21. Inspect for leaks using the following procedure:

    Turn the ignition ON , with the engine OFF, for 2 seconds.
     
    Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
     
    Turn the ignition ON , with the engine OFF.
     
    Inspect for fuel leaks.

  23. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
