    Rocker Arms and Pushrods

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



    When removing the valve train components, they should be kept in the order they were removed.

    2.2L Engine

    See Figure 1

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air cleaner and air duct assembly.
    4.  
    5. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, then disconnect the plug wire clips from the valve cover and position aside.

    1. Disconnect the throttle cables from the throttle body, then remove the cable bracket from the intake plenum and move aside.
    2.  
    3. Remove the valve cover bolts, then remove the cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rocker arm nuts, balls and rocker arms.
    6.  

    To install:
    1. Clean the gasket surfaces thoroughly.
    2.  
    3. Coat the bearing surfaces of the rocker arms and the arm balls with Molykote® or it's equivalent.
    4.  
    5. Seat the pushrods in the lifters.
    6.  
    7. Install the rocker arms, balls and nuts in the same positions they were removed from. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install a new gasket in the valve cover.
    10.  
    11. Install the valve cover on the cylinder head, then tighten the cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Install the throttle cable bracket on the intake plenum, then connect the throttle control cables to the throttle body.
    14.  
    15. Attach the spark plug wire clips to the valve cover, then connect the plug wires to the spark plugs.
    16.  
    17. Install the air cleaner an air duct assembly.
    18.  
    19. Connect the negative battery cable.
    20.  
    21. Install fresh oil to the fill line on the dipstick, then start the engine to verify no leaks.
    22.  

    2.5L Engine

    See Figure 2

    1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
    2.  
    3. Tag and remove the spark plug wires from the plugs and the cover clips.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect and remove the EGR valve.
    6.  
    7. Remove the valve cover.
    8.  
    9. On fuel injected engines relieve pressure in the fuel system before disconnecting any fuel lines.

    1. Loosen and remove the rocker arm bolt and balls.
    2.  
    3. Lift the rocker arm off the stud, keeping rocker arms in order for installation.
    4.  

    To install:
    1. Position the rocker arms on the studs, then install the arm balls and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Attach the valve cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the EGR valve.
    6.  
    7. Attach the plug wire clip to the cover, then attach all the plug wires in there proper locations.
    8.  
    9. Install the air cleaner assembly.
    10.  

    2.8L Engine

    See Figures 3 and 4

    1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
    4.  
    5. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
    6.  
    7. Remove the valve cover.
    8.  
    9. Remove the rocker arm nuts, balls and rocker arms, then pull the pushrods from their seats.

    To install:
    1. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and intake manifold with degreaser.
    2.  
    3. Coat the bearing surfaces of the rocker arms and the arm balls with Molykote® or it's equivalent.
    4.  
    5. Seat the pushrods in the lifters.
    6.  
    7. Install the rocker arms, balls and nuts in the same positions they were removed from. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Be sure to adjust valve lash after replacing rocker arms.
    8.  
    9. Install the valve covers.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine, check for leaks.
    12.  

    3.0L and 3.8L Engines
    1. Remove the valve cover(s).
    2.  
    3. Remove the rocker arm shaft(s).
    4.  
    5. Place the shaft on a clean surface.
    6.  
    7. Remove the nylon rocker arm retainers.
    8.  
    9. Slide the rocker arms off the shaft and inspect them for wear or damage. Keep them in order!
    10.  

    To install:
    1. To install, reverse the removal steps. If new rocker arms are being installed, note that they are stamped R (right) or L (left), meaning that they be used on the right or left of each cylinder, NOT right and left cylinder banks. Each rocker arm must be centered over its oil hole. New nylon retainers must be used.

    3.1L Engine (VIN T)
    1. Release fuel pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the valve covers.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rocker arm nuts.
    6.  
    7. Remove rocker are pivot ball and arms. Keep the parts in order.
    8.  
    9. Remove the pushrods.
    10.  

    Keep all components separated. The pushrods are not the same length. Intake pushrods are 6 in. (152mm) long and marked orange, while the exhaust pushrods are 63/8in. (162mm) long and marked blue.

    To install:
    1. Install the pushrods taking care they are in the proper locations.
    2.  
    3. Make sure the pushrods are seated in the lifters.
    4.  
    5. Install the rocker arms, pivots and nuts. They should be coated with prelube (GM 1052365 or equivalent).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the rocker arm nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the valve covers. Install the battery cable.
    10.  

    3.1L Engine (VIN M)

    See Figure 5

    LEFT SIDE ROCKER ARMS (FRONT)
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the valve cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rocker arm nuts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods. Keep them in order.
    6.  

    To install:
    1. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
    2.  
    3. Coat all the valve train components with engine oil prior to installation.
    4.  
    5. Install the pushrods and install the rocker arms on the studs. Install the rocker arm balls and mounting nuts. Make sure the pushrods are properly seated in the lifter and rocker arm. Tighten the mounting nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the valve cover.
    8.  
    9. Connect the negative battery cable.
    10.  
    11. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.

    RIGHT SIDE ROCKER ARMS (REAR)
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the valve cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rocker arm nuts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods.
    6.  

    To install:
    1. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
    2.  
    3. Coat all the valve train components with engine oil prior to installation.
    4.  
    5. Install the pushrods and install the rocker arms on the studs. Install the rocker arm balls and mounting nuts. Make sure the pushrods are properly seated in the lifter and rocker arm. Tighten the mounting nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the rocker arm cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Connect the negative battery cable.
    10.  
    11. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.
    12.  

    3.3L Engine
    1. Release fuel pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the valve covers.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rocker arm pedestal bolts.
    6.  
    7. Remove rocker arm and pedestal assembly.
    8.  

    Keep all components in order, if old parts are to be reinstalled they must be installed in the same locations.

    1. Remove the pushrods.
    2.  

    To install:
    1. Install the pushrods taking care they are in the proper locations.
    2.  
    3. Make sure the pushrods are seated in the lifters.
    4.  
    5. Install the rocker arm assembly. Coat threads with lock compound (GM 12345493 or equivalent).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the rocker arm bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the valve covers. Install the battery cable.
    10.  

    4.3L Diesel Engine
    1. Remove the valve cover(s).
    2.  
    3. Remove the rocker arm nuts, pivot and rocker arms.
    4.  
    5. If rocker arms are being replaced, they must be replaced in cylinder sets. Never replace just one rocker arm per cylinder! If a stud was replaced, coat the threads with locking compound and tighten it to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    6.  

    To install:
    1. Position the set of rocker arms (for one cylinder) in the proper location.
    2.  
    3. Perform the valve lifter bleed-down procedure. This is absolutely necessary!
    4.  


    WARNING
    If lifters are not bled, engine damage will be unavoidable!

    1. Lubricate the wear points with GM part no. 1050169 lubricant or an equivalent, then install the pivots.
    2.  
    3. Install the nuts and tighten alternately. Tighten the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
