2.0L Engine

PRIMARY WINDING RESISTANCE

  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake resonators.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Check for dirt, corrosion or damage on the terminals and repair as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Measure coil primary resistance between the center ignition coil pin (B+) and pins 1 (coil 1) and 3 (coil 2).
  12.  
  13. Resistance should be 0.3-1.0 ohms. If resistance is out of specifications, replace the coil pack. If resistance is within specifications, proceed to secondary windings testing.

SECONDARY WINDING RESISTANCE

  1. Measure coil secondary resistance between the corresponding spark plug wire towers on the coil.

    Coil 1-cylinders 1 and 4
     
    Coil 2-cylinders 2 and 3
     

  2.  
  3. Resistance should be 12.8-13.1 kilohms. If secondary resistance is not within specification, replace the coil pack.

2.5L Engine

PRIMARY WINDING RESISTANCE

  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Check for dirt, corrosion or damage on the terminals and repair as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Measure coil primary resistance between ignition coil pin 4 (B+) and pins 1 (coil 2), 2 (coil 3) and 3 (coil 1).
  10.  
  11. Resistance should be 0.3-1.0 ohms. If resistance is out of specifications, replace the coil pack. If resistance is within specifications, proceed to secondary windings testing.
  12.  

SECONDARY WINDING RESISTANCE

  1. Measure coil secondary resistance between the corresponding spark plug wire towers on the coil.

    Coil 1-cylinders 1 and 5
     
    Coil 3-cylinders 2 and 6
     
    Coil 2-cylinders 3 and 4
     

  2.  
  3. Resistance should be 12.8-13.1 kilohms. If secondary resistance is not within specification, replace the coil pack.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.0L Engine

See Figures 8 through 12

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake resonators from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the ignition coil pack connector.
  6.  
  7. Label and remove the spark plug wires from the coil by squeezing the locking tabs and twisting while gently pulling upward.
  8.  
  9. Remove the four ignition coil pack retaining screws and remove the ignition coil.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Position the coil pack into place and tighten the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the spark plug wires. The plug wire boots are fully seated when a click is heard.
  4.  
  5. Attach the coil pack connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the air intake resonators.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

2.5L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the ignition coil pack connector and unplug the radio interference capacitor located on the coil pack.
  4.  
  5. Remove the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid from the upper intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Label and remove the spark plug wires from the coil by squeezing the locking tabs and twisting while gently pulling upward.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil pack retaining bolts, the radio interference capacitor, and the ground wire from the bracket and remove the coil pack.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Position the coil pack into place, attach the radio interference capacitor and ground wire and tighten the retaining bolts to 40-61 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the spark plug wires. The plug wire boots are fully seated when a click is heard.
  4.  
  5. Install the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid onto the upper intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Attach the coil pack connector and the radio interference capacitor connector.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
