    Engine Cooling Fan/Clutch Fan

    The vehicles covered by this guide are either equipped with a standard cooling fan (early models) or a clutch fan assembly (most later model vehicles). Standard cooling fans are simply bolted to the water pump hub, while on clutch fans, the fan blade assembly is bolted to a clutch assembly which is secured to water pump hub studs. Both fans are removed in a similar manner, but the clutch assembly requires a little more effort.

    CLUTCH FAN DIAGNOSIS



    Start the engine and listen for fan noise. Fan noise is usually evident during the first few minutes after start-up and when the clutch is engaged for maximum cooling (during idle). If fan noise is excessive, the fan cannot be rotated by hand while the engine is stopped or there is a rough grating feel as the fan is turned, replace the clutch.

    Check a loose fan assembly for wear and replace as necessary. Under certain conditions, the fan may flex up to 1 / 4 in. This is not cause for replacement.

    The fan clutch is not affected by small fluid leaks which may occur in the area around the bearing assembly. If leakage appears excessive, replace the fan clutch.

    If the fan clutch free-wheels with no drag (revolves more than five times when spun by hand), replace the clutch.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    DO NOT use or repair a damaged fan assembly. An unbalanced fan assembly could fly apart and cause personal injury or property damage. Replace damaged assemblies with new ones.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    3. Remove the upper radiator shroud and, if desired for additional clearance, remove the radiator from the vehicle.
    4.  

    Although it is not necessary in most cases, the radiator may be removed from the vehicle for easier access to the fan retainers. If the radiator is left in place, use extra caution to prevent damage to the fragile radiator fins.

    1. Remove the fan assembly attaching nuts, then remove the fan assembly from the engine.
    2.  

    Some vehicles use a spacer between the fan and the water pump pulley. If used, be sure to retain the spacer for installation.

    1. If necessary, the clutch may be removed from the fan by removing the attaching nuts or bolts (as applicable).
    2.  

    To install:
    1. If removed, install the fan to the clutch and secure using the fasteners. Tighten the fasteners to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).

    3. If equipped, align the yellow paint mark on the fan clutch hub with the yellow paint mark on the water pump hub. This will help maintain a balanced fan assembly.
    4.  
    5. Position the spacer (if used) and fan assembly to the water pump pulley and secure using the fasteners. Tighten the fasteners to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) on 1994-97 models and 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) on 1998-99 models.
    6.  
    7. If removed for clearance, install the radiator.
    8.  
    9. Install the upper fan shroud.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable.
    12.  
    13. If the radiator was removed, properly refill the engine cooling system.
