    Removal & Installation



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Support the lower control arm on a floor jack.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Front wheel
       
      Brake caliper and rotor
       
      Outer tie rod end
       
      Stabilizer bar link
       
      Lower ball joint
       
      Shock absorber
       

    6.  
    7. Lower the jack and remove the coil spring.

    To install:

    1. Install the coil spring and raise the control arm into position.
    2.  
    3. Install or connect the following:

      Shock absorber
       
      Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
       
      Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
       
      Outer tie rod end. Tighten the nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
       
      Brake caliper and rotor
       
      Front wheel

    4.  

    1. Raise and safely support vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
    4.  
    5. Remove disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar and strut bar from the lower suspension arm.
    8.  
    9. Remove the shock absorber.
    10.  
    11. Install Spring Compressor DD-1278 up through the lower suspension arm, coil spring and shock hole in the frame. The bell-shaped adapter goes against the lower suspension arm. Install the nut on top of the tool at the shock hole.

      Install Spring Compressor DD-1278 up through the lower suspension arm (1), coil spring (3) and shock hole (1) in the frame.
    12.  
    13. Tighten the spring compressor nut against bell-shaped adapter finger tight then loosen 1/2 turn
      NOTE
      This will hold the spring in place until the lower suspension arm is separated from the steering knuckle.

    14.  
    15. Remove the cotter pin and lower ball joint nut at the steering knuckle.
    16.  
    17. Install Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A on the lower ball joint. Turn the threaded portion of the tool and lock securely against the lower joint.
    18.  
    19. Expand the tool enough to place force on the lower ball joint. Strike the steering knuckle sharply with a hammer to loosen the joint. Do not attempt to force the joint out of the steering knuckle with the loosening tool.
    20.  
    21. Remove the spring compressor tool and pivot the lower suspension arm downward.
    22.  
    23. Remove coil spring and isolator pad from the vehicle.
    24.  

    To install:

    1. Tape the isolator pad to the top of the coil spring. Position the spring in the lower suspension arm well. Be sure that the coil spring is seated in the well. The flat or closed end of the coil spring is the top. The ramped or open end of the coil spring is the bottom.
    2.  
    3. Install Spring Compressor DD-1278 up through the lower suspension arm, coil spring and shock hole in the frame.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the tool nut to compress the coil spring.
    6.  
    7. Position the lower ball joint in the steering knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Install the retaining nut on the lower ball joint and tighten to:
      1. LD 11/16 bolt: 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm.)
      2.  
      3. HD 3/4 bolt: 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm)
      4.  

    10.  
    11. Install new cotter pins.
    12.  
    13. Install the strut bar.
    14.  
    15. Remove the spring compressor tool.
    16.  
    17. Install the stabilizer bar.
    18.  
    19. Install the shock absorber.
    20.  
    21. Install disc brake caliper.
    22.  
    23. Install wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
    24.  

    Coil Spring Suspension
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Support the lower control arm on a floor jack.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Front wheel
       
      Shock absorber
       

    6.  
    7. Compress the spring.
    8.  
    9. Remove or disconnect the following:
      WARNING
      Support the upper control arm and knuckle.



      Stabilizer bar link
       
      Lower ball joint
       

    10.  
    11. Lower the jack and tighten the compressor to allow coil spring removal. Catch the isolator pad.
    12.  

    To install:

    1. Install the coil spring and raise the control arm into position.
    2.  
    3. Install or connect the following:

      Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm), plus a 90 degree turn (1500 Series), or, 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm) (HD Series)
       
      Shock absorber
       
      Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
       
      Front wheel
       

    4.  
    5. Lower the vehicle and allow the suspension to take the weight. Tighten the front and rear control arm pivot bolts to 150 ft. lbs. (204 Nm) (LD); 210 ft. lbs. (285 Nm) HD
    6.  

    Link/Coil Suspension
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Support the axle on a floor jack.
    4.  
    5. Place alignment marks on the lower arm adjuster and axle bracket.
    6.  
    7. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Front wheel
       
      Upper control arm and loosen the lower arm bolts
       
      Track bar from the frame rail bracket
       
      Drag link from the Pitman arm
       
      Stabilizer bar link
       
      Shock absorber
       

    8.  
    9. Lower the jack and remove the coil spring.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Install the coil spring and raise the axle into position.
    2.  
    3. Install or connect the following:

      Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
       
      Shock absorber
       
      Track bar
       
      Drag link
       
      On 4wd, the front driveshaft
       
      Upper control arm and lower arm bolts. Upper arm nuts to 110 ft. lbs. (149 Nm); lower arm nuts to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm)
