Rubber Gasket Barely Extends Past Flange

1 of 1 people found this helpful

My 2000 Saturn has seen more than 60 oil changes and the oil plug gasket, showing obvious signs of age finally began leaking. The area surrounding the drain hole is perfect...no dinks, no corrosion, no fractures. I figured for such an affordable price, I'd get this new plug with what should be a gasket that was engineered to fit and endure. The O.D. on the new gasket is smaller than the original but I still proceeded to install it. Next day, after seeing a 16-inch diameter oil spot on my driveway, I cut a new gasket from an scrap bicycle tube, placed it on the old plug along with the old gasket and reinstalled it. So far, so good.

I had doubts when installing this new plug. While I felt the rubber gasket contact the pan, it was only about one-sixteenth to one-twelfth of a turn later the bolt was as far as it would go, metal flange to metal pan. Metal never touched metal with the old plug. I have doubts this plug would perform properly on any car based on the ultra-thin, small O.D. gasket which provides almost no seal at all.

      Pros: Right thread size

Cons: Inset too deep, gasket not thick enough
