    Toyota Tundra Rack

1 of 1 people found this helpful

I purchased this unit to replace a leaky rack in my 2006 Toyota Tundra and I opted for the new vice remanufactured unit. The installation went as expected, once I centered the unit. It would have seemed that the unit would have been centered from the factory, which was not the case. Once centered, I used the measurements from the old rack to position the tie rod ends and it worked as I would have expected. I flushed the system, per directions from the factory and bled the air from the system. Steering seemed to be working but when I took it to have the wheel alignment done, the shop informed me that they couldn't do the alignment because the inner tie rods were unthreading from the rack and the toe could not be adjusted. Further, the technician said the vehicle was unsafe to drive in that condition.
My options were to have it towed to my house or have the shop do the repairs. I talked to the tech support folks at Atlantic Automotive who told me that the retaining washer had come loose (a problem they had rarely experienced) and that I could either replace the whole rack or pull the boot, apply red Locktite to the threads, flatten the tabs on the washer, re-install the retaining washer and bend the tabs back into place. I opted to have the shop do the repairs. They repaired the left side and inspected the right side which was good at the time of the inspection, and completed the wheel alignment. I drove the truck to New York City to move some furniture back to Virginia and as I was trying to maneuver into a parking spot, I lost power steering. When I checked under the truck, there was puddle of ATF . We loaded the furniture, I added fluid to the system which was sufficient to get the truck out of the city. We actually made it all the way to Virginia with no power steering. Not a problem since the interstates are mostly straight driving. When I removed the rack the following day, I discovered what I think was the retaining washer in the boot on the right side. I didn't remove the boot to verify but I could feel loose parts inside the boot when I squeezed it. Had I known that was the problem, I would have had the vehicle towed. Needless to say, I returned the unit for a refund and will not be buying another from this company.

Pros: Exact fit, No problems with the installation once the unit was centered

Cons: Inner tie rods unthreaded from the rack, Unit was not centered when I received it
