Duralast Power Steering gear (3 turn lock to lock)

replaced steering gear on 92 GMC suburban with 250K miles. The original gear I replaced was better than this one. This one is hard to turn left and easy to turn right . Came with LIFETIME warranty but still a pain to replace.
Wish their quality control was better.

    Not pleased.

First thing I noticed was that the seal on the output shaft was missing. I caught it at the counter at the store (having ordered it the night before, it was the only one available) so I just pried the seal off of my old one and stuck it on. Get it all bolted up and things seem to be going smoothly. Once the steering linkage was hooked up, I found that I had at least 1/8 of a turn of play in the steering wheel before the pitman arm even starts to budge. I'm not exaggerating. I tightened up the adjusting bolt a solid 1.5 to 2 turns until I felt resistance and backed off about 1/8 of a turn from there. The play at the steering wheel is down to just over 2" now. When I wiggle the steering wheel back and forth I can actually feel the dead-spot between where the gears make contact. I can see the input shaft turning with no motion in the pitman arm, this is all in the gearbox. Totally not usable on 35" tires which groove-steer like crazy. This box was horribly misadjusted and the gears seem to be every bit as worn out as the box I was replacing. I think their quality control is monkey with an "ok" stamp. That was a total waste of time and money. Very, very disappointed.

    Pros: clean and pretty

Cons: came missing output shaft seal. had more play than the box i was replacing

Steering Gear replacement full size 4WD Blazer

2 of 2 people found this helpful

I had severe wear in my original steering gear (253,000 on a 94 full size Blazer 4WD) and had made every adjustment possibe prior to attempting this replacement. The change out took nearly 5 hours, including flushing and bleeding the system as recommended. If I had to do it again, (not) it would take more like 3 1/2 to 4. hours. It steers like a new car, maybe better. I didn't realize until I replaced it, just how poorly it steered and how stiff it was. Overall, I am extremely happy with the quality and performance of this part.

    Pros: End result was incredible

Cons: Labor intensive when DIY at home
