    Almost unusable

I have NEVER had success with remanufactured steering gears from any of the parts stores. I replaced mine today because of excessive play in the steering like most with super dutys do. Reviews are hit or miss, so I decided to chance it since the gearbox can be replaced in a few hours and I have a road trip coming up. Got the new box is and there is about 3/16 inch play on the output shaft, and it is very notchy when turning over center. All they did was paint a box that was returned as a core and tighten the sector shaft adjustment. Unfortunately if you tighten it too far it galls the gears and it will be always be notchy over center. I traded in a FAR better box as a core, and I can not get it back. It had less play in the output shaft than this one did and it was not mis-adjusted and ruined. Looks like I will be going to the dealer to try to get a driveable truck. It is as if whomever they have rebuild these boxes has no idea how to set up a steering gearbox. I am a GM world class tech, one of the assessments you must do is properly set up a steering gear to manufacture specifications. Why is it the rebuilders can't seem to follow service information in setting it up?

    Pros: Price

Cons: Not actually rebuilt, just leak tested and painted

2000 Ford Excursion Steering Gear Box, Auto Zone Part # 7556

1 of 1 people found this helpful

My Dad always said: You can pay me now or you can pay me later, but it's going to cost twice as much when you pay me later. It pains me to say once again, he was right and I was wrong. Count me into the later part of his advice.

By the tag on the gear box listing part number 7556, this gear box was re-manufactured 11/15/2013 in Mexico. Over the past months, I've made at least 4 adjustments to remove slop and play from the gear box. After a complete steering rebuild, I still have steering slop and I now need to make yet another adjustment.

ALL steering components under this truck are new high quality stock equivalent to include tires, ball joints, rod ends, arms, adjustment sleeves, hardware and wheel bearing hubs. All components have been professionally installed in the past few months. This truck has always been stock with no mods. With the amount of money and effort that I have put into the front end of this truck I assure all concerned it's a gearbox issue.

This truck pulls a 36' / 9,000lb trailer on a regular bases; steering slop is unacceptable, especially here in the Rocky Mountains.

Auto Zone, Pretty sure you are watching and based alone on these 3 reviews alone, I would encourage your Quality Assurance Department to re-evaluate this supplier. I have made my evaluation. A follow up back here from you Quality Assurance Department would be most appropriate on their findings.

If you should need further information or would like to see the gearbox, please contact me prior to 7.15.15 as I will be sending this 18 month old gearbox out as a core for my replacement unit.

Pros: You get exactly what you pay for!!

Cons: You get exactly what you pay for!!

    Don't bother...

Bought a 2000 4x4 V-10 excursion. The steering was sloppy and since I only drive it a few thousand miles a year, I figured a steering box from Autozone would be "good enough" for my vehicle. Installed it and all was good ! About 500 miles later I noticed that the steering was getting sloppy again.. I inspected the steering box and found that the pitman shaft would move side to side about a 1/4 inch when the steering wheel was moved back and forth.. I figure we're all only human maybe it was assembled on a bad day. It has a lifetime warranty so what the hey... I pull it out and exchange it with another "new" one. Drove it around town and all seemed good ! An opportunity arose for me to purchase a particular boat I've been searching for 1000 miles away.. Figure my truck is ready to go... Wrong... Made it about half way there and my steering got SO bad I could not keep my vehicle in my lane every time it hit a bump!! It easily had 6" of play in the wheel.. We had a set schedule so I "white knuckled" it the rest of the way.. A scary, dangerous drive for sure! I found a Ford Dealer that had one on the shelf however could not find anyone to install it on a Saturday so I ended up purchasing the tools I needed and changed it out in a parking lot.. It made the 1000 mile trip back on the Ford steering box with no issue ! Autozone did refund my whole purchase price as well as the core but I could've done without the inconvenience...

Pros: Helps keep the rust off of your tools.

    Cons: Assembled with inferior components.

    super duty power steering pump

I had to replace 3 of these because the first replacement was sloppy and couldn't be adjusted.
The second unit had bad threads at the outlet hose
The third unit is in the truck now and still has excessive worm shaft play.
The spline at the pitman arm is very difficult to remove.

    Pros: price and availability

    Cons: quality, ease of installation
