Calcium chloride deicer pellets can be sprinkled on asphalt and concrete to melt ice even when outside temperatures are below freezing. Calcium chloride melts ice and snow faster than rock salt and other deicers. This concentrated formula can cover 4 times as much area as ordinary rock salt with fewer and less frequent applications.

Calcium chloride is the fastest acting ice melt on the market, and our calcium chloride pellets produce exothermic reactions to melt ice faster in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit. Pellets are better shaped to melt ice quickly than flat or crystal shaped ice melt blends. The round pellet concentrates calcium chloride to penetrate ice quickly and break the ice’s bond with the concrete beneath.

Get the right blend for your driveway with either full strength calcium chloride ice melt from Prestone, or get Scotwood Industries Road Runner blend ice melt, made from a long-lasting blend of calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and sodium chloride. Blends are better for applications near plants like lawn grass. Pure calcium chloride will melt ice in colder temperatures.

Calcium chloride consists of one calcium ion and two chloride ions, and dissolves when it comes into contact with water. As the ice melt dissolves, the bonds that hold these three ions together are broken. The breaking of ionic bonds generates heat by releasing thermal energy into the surrounding ice molecules. This exothermic reaction raises the temperature of the ice above the freezing point, melting the ice.
