When a driver shifts gears in a vehicle with a manual transmission, the transmission must first be released from the engine, which is constantly rotating. Because the wheels are not always rotating, and the gears cannot rotate while being shifted, automobiles need a way to disconnect the wheels and the transmission from the engine.

The clutch assembly accomplishes this using the clutch plate, flywheel, and pressure plate. Internal springs ensure that the assembly is engaged by default, meaning the pressure plates are pushing the other two components together, allowing the engine to transmit energy to the transmission. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the throw-out bearing is pushed against the middle of the diaphragm spring which causes the pressure plates stop pressing the other components together, allowing the engine to spin without spinning the wheels or the transmission.

The clutch disc features friction material that keeps the system working as intended. Over time, this material wears out. Signs of a worn clutch include difficulty shifting, grumbling, loss of acceleration from slipping, and a spongy, vibrating, or loose pedal.

If you encounter these types of symptoms, you can test your own clutch by idling the car in neutral with the parking brake set. If there is a growling noise when the pedal is not pushed in, you likely have a problem with your transmission. If pushing the pedal results in a chirping noise, the culprit is likely the throw-out or release bearing. A squealing noise indicates something is wrong with the pilot bearing. A manual transmission that slips while driving indicates a worn disc.
