Dodge Ram 1500 Oil Filter
After you have your replacement oil filter, look at its form to see if it has a hard outer shell or if the filter material is on the outside. If it has a smooth shell, the filter must be replaced underneath your vehicle during an oil change. If the folds of the filter are visible, you have a cartridge filter that gets installed under the hood of your truck. For a canister filter, raise your truck on ramps or jack stands, drain your engine oil into a pan, and use a filter wrench to remove and replace the filter with another. Hand-tighten the replacement into position. Replace the drain plug and add new oil to your truck to finish the task. For a cartridge filter, raise the hood and locate the filter access cap in front of your engine's airbox. Loosen the cap using a wrench and remove it to replace the old filter with the new one. Close the cap, and you're finished.

I have always used the Fram filters, a filter that can do what the higher priced filters do but at a lower cost. I'll stick with Fram.
