Your engine has a lot of moving parts. The lubrication system uses oil to lubricate the valve train, piston rings, and main and rod bearings to keep your car running smoothly. This helps reduce friction.

Friction turns useful energy into heat, wearing out your engine parts over time. This leads to increased fuel consumption, decreased power output, and—in extreme cases—engine failure. As oil moves through your engine it creates a separating film, adding distance between parts to reduce friction. The decrease in friction reduces your engine’s temperature, and makes the most of the energy generated by your engine.

Some fuel-air mixture is exhausted from the combustion chamber to the sump where oil pools in the bottom of the engine. Exposure to exhaust and engine heat speeds up oxidation, the process of oil reacting with oxygen molecules, thickening the lubricant, causing it to degrade, or wear. Thick motor oil poorly lubricates the engine, potentially getting clogged up instead of creating the separating film that protects engine parts.

Signs it may be time to change your oil include smoky exhaust, falling oil levels, and increased engine noise, particularly when idling. These signs are present because with worn oil, your engine is working harder and running a lot rougher. Don’t put your engine components at risk, change out that old oil for new oil at AutoZone.

We carry a wide variety of brands of conventional and synthetic oil for all major automobiles. To find what oil to use, just enter your vehicle’s year, make, model, and engine up above, or ask an AutoZoner at a store near you.
