Operation

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

The oil pressure switch provides a ground for the instrument cluster low oil pressure indicator light. The switch receives an oil pressure input from the engine main oil gallery. When the engine oil pressure is greater than 4 psi, the switch contacts open, providing an open circuit to the low pressure indicator light.

To install:

NOTE
If the oil pressure switch is removed, it must be replaced with a new switch.

WARNING
The oil pressure switch has tapered threads, over-tightening could crack the engine block.

  1. Install the oil pressure switch using an oil pressure socket C-4597 (1), or equivalent. Tighten the switch to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the oil pressure switch electrical connector.
  4.
  5. Position the A/C compressor (1) and install the 3 mounting bolts (2). Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  8.
  9. Install the splash shield to the right side frame rail.

Testing

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.
  4.
  5. Connect a jumper wire from the harness wire to a ground on the engine (if single wire) or across the 2 harness wires.
  6.
  7. Turn the ignition switch ON. The low oil pressure warning light should go ON.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the jumper. The light should go OFF. If the lamp does not light when the circuit is completed, suspect a faulty bulb or wiring problem.
  10.
  11. With the engine OFF and the oil pressure at 0 psi, check for continuity across the sensor body.
    1. On single-terminal sensors, check continuity between the sensor terminal and a ground on the sensor body or the engine block.
    2.
    3. On 2-terminal sensors, check for continuity between the 2 terminals.
    4.

  12.
  13. If there is no continuity, replace the oil pressure sensor.
