Honda Accord/Prelude 1984-1995 Repair Guide

Trunk Lid

See Figure 1

  1. Open the trunk lid.
  3. On 1986-91 Accords, unplug the wiring connectors from the latch and lighting units inside the trunk lid. Label or identify each connector to ease reassembly. Tie a long piece of string to the end of the wire harness. Slowly and carefully remove the harness from the trunk lid. Leave the string in place to reroute the harness at reassembly.

  1. Have an assistant support the trunk lid. Remove the bolts securing the lid to the hinges. Lift the trunk lid from the vehicle.
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the bolts just snug until the position is adjusted.

Once the trunk lid is installed, tighten the bolts just snug. Close the lid and check the seam alignment.

Loosen the hinge bolts and position the trunk lid as necessary, then snug them and recheck. Continue the process until the lid latches smoothly and aligns evenly at all the seams.

The striker may be adjusted in fashion similar to adjusting a door striker. Shims may be added or removed as necessary. Keep in mind it is usually not necessary to adjust the latch to align the trunk lid. Tighten the mounting bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm.)
