Removal & Installation



4.3L Engine

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Position the hood in the full up position.

  7. Drain the cooling system. Properly dispose of used coolant.
  8.  
  9. Properly discharge the air conditioning system.
  10.  
  11. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fuel pipes/hoses.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower fan shroud.
  16.  
  17. Remove the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the skid plate, if equipped.

  23. Drain the engine oil.
  24.  
  25. Remove the starter.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission cover.
  28.  
  29. Remove the catalytic converter.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect all required electrical connections and cables and retaining clips.
  32.  
  33. Remove the torque converter retaining bolts.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove the radiator hoses. Remove the heater hoses.
  38.  
  39. Remove the thermostat and water inlet housing.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect and plug the refrigerant lines.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect all required electrical connections and cables, retaining clips and retaining brackets.
  44.  
  45. Loosen the power steering pump rear bracket nut. Remove the bolts from the power steering pump bracket.
  46.  
  47. Leave the air conditioning compressor and power steering pump attached to the bracket and position it to the side.

  49. Install the engine lifting brackets, tool J41427 or equivalent.
  50.  
  51. Install a suitable engine lifting fixture.

  53. Remove the right and left engine mount retaining bolts.
  54.  
  55. Support the transmission using the proper support equipment.
  56.  
  57. Remove the engine to transmission retaining bolts.
  58.  
  59. Carefully check to ensure that all components, wires, hoses, brackets have been removed so that the engine can be removed from the vehicle.
  60.  
  61. Carefully remove the engine from the vehicle.
  62.  

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to fill the cooling system with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Be sure to properly recharge the air conditioning system.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  10.  
  11. Road test the vehicle and correct problems as required.
  12.  

4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L Engines

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system. Properly dispose of used coolant.
  6.  
  7. Properly discharge the air conditioning system.
  8.  
  9. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  10.  
  11. Drain the engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hood ground strap.
  14.  
  15. Assemble two sets of the following: M6 bolt, two each 0.75 inch thick flat washers, and an M6 nut.
  16.  
  17. Release the retainer securing the hood strut rod to the hood strut bracket stud. Remove the rod from the stud.
  18.  
  19. Remove the air inlet grille end caps, lift the end cap up to disengage the retainers.
  20.  
  21. Have an assistant support the hood. Remove the hood hinge bolts. Set them aside.
  22.  
  23. Raise the hood until the service position notch in the upper hinge is reached. There is a positive stop which limits the hood from opening too far.
  24.  
  25. Install the two sets of M6 bolts to both the left and right side service notches. Tighten finger tight.
  26.  
  27. Lower the hood until the bolts rest against the lower hinge. Tighten the bolts to secure the hood.
  28.  
  29. The hood is now set in the service position.

  31. Remove the hood latch. Remove the front upper tie bar.
  32.  
  33. Remove the intake manifold.

    Upper and the lower radiator hoses from the engine
     
    Heater hoses from the engine and the cowl
     
    Harness connectors from the oil pressure sensor and lifter oil manifold
     
    Ground strap from the left cylinder head
     
    Negative battery cable and harness ground from the right cylinder head

  35. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

    Harness grounds and clips from the engine block
     
    Transmission oil cooler line clip bolt from the oil pan
     
    Starter
     
    Harness connectors for the knock sensors, CMP sensor, A/C pressure sensor, CKP sensor and oil level sensor
     
    Block heater connector, if equipped

  37. Lower the vehicle.

    Alternator bracket assembly and set aside with the power steering pump
     
    Ignition coils to allow attachment of the engine lift brackets

  39. Install engine lift brackets J41798 or equivalent. Tighten the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the M10 bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  41. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

    Torque converter bolts

  43. Lower the vehicle.
  44.  
  45. Install an engine crane.
  46.  
  47. Install a floor jack or stands to transmission for support.
  48.  
  49. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Position the engine in the vehicle. Make sure the engine is properly aligned and mated with the transmission, then remove the crane.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine mount bolts; start with the middle bolt then the outer bolts. Tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the transmission bolts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Align the torque converter bolt holes and install the bolts. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm) except on 4L80E transmissions. On the 4L80E, tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  8.  
  9. The remaining installation is the reverse of removal.
