Diagnosis & Testing
2002-05 Impreza
  1. Make sure that door link moves to LOCK or UNLOCK position when battery voltage is applied between the following terminals:
    1. Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal No. 1, and negative (-) battery terminal to terminal No. 3.
    2.  
    3. Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal No. 3, and negative (-) battery terminal to terminal No. 1.

2005 Legacy And Outback
  1. Disconnect the door lock actuator harness connector.
  2.  
  3. Connect the battery to door lock actuator terminals. As follows:
    1. Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal No. 2, and negative (-) battery terminal to terminal No. 1 to lock.
    2.  
    3. Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal No. 1, and negative (-) battery terminal to terminal No. 2 to unlock.
    4.

  5. Replace the door lock actuator if the operation is not correct.

  1. Make sure that door link moves to LOCK or UNLOCK position when battery voltage is applied between the following terminals:

Door Lock Switch
Removal & Installation
1997
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door panel retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Lift the door panel up and disconnect all the electrical connections required to separate the door panel from the door.
  6.  
  7. Remove the door panel from the vehicle. Remove the switch assembly from its mounting.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  10.

The door look switch is part of the power window switch assembly or part of the inner door latch. Refer to -Door Lock Motor, Removal & Installation- for additional information.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On vehicles without power windows, remove the window handle by removing the retaining clip. Slide a flat bladed tool between the handle and the door panel and press inward on the retainer spring clip.
  4.  
  5. Use a suitable prying tool and remove the remote handle cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove screws which hold gusset cover, and detach cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove screws which hold pull handle and other screws located further inside. On models with power windows, the window switches come off with the door panels.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clip attached to trim panel using a trim clip puller tool. Then remove the trim panel. The plastic sealing cover can be removed from the door at this time, if needed.
    NOTE
    When removing the trim panel, use care not to damage the panel or to tear it with the tools.

  12.  
  13. Disconnect the actuator electrical connector. Disconnect the required linkage rods.
  14.  
  15. Remove the actuator assembly retaining screws. Remove the actuator assembly from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the inner remote cap.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws that retain the trim panel to the door. You will have to lift the door pocket mat to get at 2 of the screws.
  6.  
  7. Carefully pry around the perimeter of the door and loosen the panel clips from the door.
  8.  
  9. As the door panel is coming off, disconnect the electrical leads from the panel.
    NOTE
    When removing the trim panel, use care not to damage the panel or to tear it with the tools.

  11. Remove the panel from the door.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the actuator electrical connector. Disconnect the required linkage rods.
  14.  
  15. Remove the actuator assembly retaining screws. Remove the actuator assembly from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

1998-2001 Models
  1. Completely close the door glass.
  2.  
  3. If not equipped with power windows, press the retainer spring behind the window crank handle with a thin flat-bladed tool. Remove the window handle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the gusset cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three screws holding the door trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Using a suitable trim panel remover, disengage the trim panel clips.
  10.  
  11. Remove the trim panel and disconnect the power windows wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Remove the speaker and remote assembly. Disconnect the wiring harnesses.
  14.  
  15. Remove the sealer with a spatula.
  16.  
  17. Turn the rod holder to disconnect the joint between the key lock and rod.
  18.  
  19. Turn the rod holder to disconnect the joint between the outer handle and rod.
  20.  
  21. Turn the rod holder to disconnect the joint between the crank and the rod.
  22.  
  23. Loosen the screws securing both the latch and actuator, then remove the latch and actuator assembly through the service hold in the bottom.
  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2002-05 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Pull up the inner latch cover toward you to remove the upper hook. Pull it to remove the lower hook. Remove the inner latch cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screw and remove the power window switch assembly. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screw in the center of the trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Using a suitable trim panel removal tool, remove the clips of the trim panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front speaker.
  12.  
  13. Using a spatula, remove the sealer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screw and the two rod joints.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inner latch handle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the mounting screws and bolt and remove the door latch assembly.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the two screws to remove the front door lock actuator.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  24.  

Rear
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Pull up the inner latch cover toward you to remove the upper hook. Pull it to remove the lower hook. Remove the inner latch cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screw in the center of the trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable trim panel removal tool, remove the clips of the trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the power window wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear speaker.
  12.  
  13. Using a spatula, remove the sealer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screw and the two rod joints.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inner latch handle.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the two screws to remove the rear door lock actuator.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
