Oil Pan Repair Guide

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine support fixture J-45057 to the engine to properly support the engine.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Drain the engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower ball joint nut and separate the lower control arm from the wheel knuckle. Refer to the following section for additional information, -Lower Control Arm, Removal & Installation.-

  15. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and position aside.
  16.  
  17. Remove the transaxle brace bolts and transaxle braces.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter motor.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front engine mount.

  25. Place a suitable floor jack under the frame.
  26.  
  27. Loosen (but do not remove) the left side frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.

  29. Lower the right side of the frame enough to remove the oil pan.
  30.  
  31. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts, oil pan and gasket.

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pan flanges, oil pan rail, front cover, rear main bearing cap and threaded holes of any old sealant material.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant GM P/N 12378521, (Canadian P/N 88901148) or the equivalent, to both sides of the crankshaft rear main bearing cap. Press the sealant into the gaps using a putty knife.
  4.  
  5. Apply sealer GM P/N 12378521, (Canadian P/N 88901148) or the equivalent, to both sides of the front cover mating area.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan gasket.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten the oil pan side bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Using a suitable jack, raise the right side of the frame and tighten the frame bolts as follows:
    1. Front frame bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rear frame bolts to 177 ft. lbs. (240 Nm).

  13. Remove the jack and install the front engine mount. Tighten the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Install the starter motor.
  18.  
  19. Install the transaxle braces and tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the A/C compressor and tighten the mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect the lower control arm to the steering knuckle, tighten the nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  24.  
  25. Install the right front splash shield.
  26.  
  27. Install the front wheel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine support fixture.
  30.  
  31. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  32.  
  33. Start the engine and check for leaks.
